The Polo T-Shirt is also known as the Tennis T-Shirt or the Golf T-Shirt or even a Chukker Shirt (another reference to the sport of Polo). It’s obvious with these names that the Polo Sport T-Shirt is a great option for athletes! They’re made out of lightweight, moisture repelling fabric that helps players stay cool and comfortable while in action. Lemonade has an exciting range of classic cotton pique Polo T Shirts which you can view below

A version of the Polo T-Shirt for men is said to have first been seen as early as 1859 in India amongst the Polo players. However, the version that we know now was created by René Lacoste, a French Tennis Player who was known for unorthodox style of playing, which included taking off his long sleeved shirts during matches. In 1926, he began selling his own line of lightweight, short sleeved shirts which he called the “Tennis Whites”. He is therefore known for popularising white polo t-shirts.

In 1933, the Polo T-Shirt men was introduced by Brooks Brothers, An American clothing retailer. They named it after the sport of Polo. It too was made of a lightweight, breathable fabric and featured a button down collar. This shirt was an instant hit and quickly became a staple of the sport. In the 1940s, the Polo Shirt’s popularity grew amongst golfers and other athletes. It was widely recognised for its comfort and performance enhancing features.

In the 1950s & 1960s however, the Polo T-Shirt entered mainstream fashion when it became popular amongst the students of the premium, ivy league colleges of America. It eventually came to be seen as a symbol of preppy, Ivy league style and was worn with khakis & corduroy pants and was seen as a casual, yet stylish alternative to the traditional dress shirt. It was this adoption by the students of these aspirational institutions which stand for legacy and influence that helped establish it as a classic piece of American clothing.
